Gouves

On the north coast of Crete, 20klm east of Heraklion , lays the municipality of Gouves with its beautiful beaches, fertile fields and traditional little villages. Its name derives from the word ‘Gouva' that translates to ‘land pit'. The earliest recorded reference of Gouves is found in the Venetian records of the Duce of Handax - naming of Heraklion during the Venetian occupation.

There are a number of reasons why Gouves is not only an ideal holiday destination but also an ideal place of residence. Among the latter, one can include:

  • its location close to Heraklion and Hersonisos allow the visitor to avoid the fuss of more touristy locations while being able to visit them in no time.

  • the fact that the wider area combines the beauties of the seaside and mountains,

  • its variety of places to visit

The mainland of the municipality has a number of traditional Cretan villages that you can taste the world famous traditional Cretan cuisine while enjoying the benefits of the countryside. Its coastal part with the villages of Kokkini Hani, Kato Gouves, Amnisos and Karteros has well organized holiday resorts and beautiful clean beaches with water sports facilities and beach bars. You should also not miss the opportunity to visit some of the area's beautiful churches, monasteries, historical monuments and the archaeological site of Niros.
