The best thing one can recommend before moving to Crete is that you consult with your General Practitioner or Practice Nurse who will assess you and your family members.

This is also a good opportunity to discuss important health issues.

 

A few good tips are to:

• Ask your doctor to provide you with a complete medical record of each member's health history so as to have it with you for future reference.

• Ask your doctor to check if your prescribed medicine can be found in Greece. If not ask for possible alternative medications.

• If you or any member of your family is undergoing a short or long term treatment, you should talk with your physician about how to continue this treatment while you are in Crete.

Crete is an island that has quite a few modern General hospitals in all four of its prefectures. At the same time, most of the hospital personnel speak English, so you will not have any communication problems. Also there are a number of cottage hospitals to villages and small towns as well as a great number of private practices, private medical centres and pharmacies.

If you are coming to Crete from a European country plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Norway, you should also consider applying for the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The EHIC entitles its holder to reduced-cost, sometimes free, medical treatment in most European countries and in Greece. The Card replaces the previously used forms, in particular the well known E 111:

• E111 and E111B used by tourists,

• E110 used by international haulage companies,

• E128 used by workers posted to another Member State and by students,

• E119 used by unemployed people seeking work in another Member State (only for benefits in kind).
