Road Network Crete
The main cities of the island are linked through a national road network. The road network is undergoing from time to time construction works in order to improve its condition, so drivers should be on alert for signs of road work. Also in some parts of the road network, the condition of the asphalt may not be ideal, so drivers are advised to drive with caution.
The speed limit in Crete is 90 km per hour (56mph) on the highway and within cities 30 -70 km per hour (18 - 45 mph) unless otherwise stated. Greece also uses the international traffic control and stop signs while traffic signs are in Greek and English.
Drivers should also be aware that in an attempt to reduce road accidents, new laws are imposed. Violations such as not wearing seatbelts or helmets for motorists, drink driving, exciding speed limits result to rather severe fines and can lead even to imprisonment.
Most national driving licenses are valid in Greece, however, if you are planning to move in Crete you should consider obtaining the international driving permit. For more information on this click here.
